Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Nitrous oxide, or “laughing gas”, sedation is a safe and effective way to take the edge off dental appointments. During the appointment, the sedative gas is inhaled through a special nose piece and can safely be used in both children and adults. With this type of sedation, you can expect to be fully alert and back to your normal self within minutes of finishing the procedure. This is a good option for patients requiring a minimal sedation level for their procedures.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral conscious sedation is taken in the form of a pill before your appointment and is utilized to achieve and mild-to-moderate level of sedation. This type of sedation is ideal for moderate anxiety, longer appointments, or surgical procedures. You will feel very relaxed and drowsy and may even fall into a light sleep during treatment.

Intravenous (IV) Sedation

IV sedation is a great option for patients with high anxiety, special needs, or for those undergoing longer or more involved surgical procedures. During IV sedation, medication is delivered directly into a vein through a catheter, resulting in optimal control of sedation level to ensure a comfortable appointment. Patients may or may not be fully asleep with IV sedation, but you should not have any memory of the procedure once the sedation has worn off. This level of sedation requires significant advanced training, and both Dr. Mike Stearns and Dr. Priya Stearns hold moderate (IV) conscious sedation certification in the province of BC.
